Revolutionary Classical Theme Restaurant 红色经典主题餐厅

For a "revolutionary" dining experience in Beijing, check out Chaoyang's Revolutionary Classical Theme Restaurant.

Revolutionary Classical Theme Restaurant

Enter through the Red Star-shaped doorway past the "Serve the People" (Wei Renmin Fuwu) banners and enter a retro revolutionary world. Wait staff are dressed as Red Guards and perform Mao-era songs and dances popular duing the Cultural Revolution (1966-76). It's karaoke chic with a political message.

The food on offer is simple and reminiscent of the fare available back in the 1970s. Most visitors are not really here for the cuisine. Older customers come for the Mao-ea nostalgia; the young visit for a peek at an almost forgotten past.

The Revolutionary Classical Theme Restaurant is a bizarre experience and definitely worth the long taxi trip out there. Photography is not encouraged and we were told to stop on a number of occasions as Red Guards barked out to put the camera away.
